Our Blessed Hope

Our HopeOur Hope

“…waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of glory of our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Titus 2:13
Our study in Romans 11 takes us out into the future. Events that are yet to come, but nevertheless foreknown by our Sovereign Father.

In Acts 1 the apostles asked Jesus a question: “Will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” Obviously, this indicates an expectation on their part that Jesus was going to restore the Davidic throne and kingdom as had often been foretold in the Old Testament prophets. View full article »

Broken His Covenant?Broken His Covenant?

“I ask, then, has God rejected His people?”
Romans 11:1

This is the fundamental question Paul is answering in this section of the book of Romans: “Has God broken His covenant with Israel?” If so, how do I know He won’t break it with me?

Today we think about Israel and her past as well as her future. The well known author, Mark Twain struggled with the incongruity of Israel’s survival. He wrote: View full article »

Exhort One Another

Exhort “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today’, that none of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
~Hebrews 3:12,13

The other day I was reading a devotional to Pastor’s on the value of building lasting friendships. In the article, the writer said something that grabbed my attention. View full article »

Consider the Ant

FinancesConsider the Ant You Slacker

Go to the ant, you slacker! Observe its ways and become wise.
Without leader, administrator, or ruler, it prepares its provisions in summer; it gathers its food during harvest.
~Proverbs 6:6-8

To anyone with half a brain it is becoming fairly obvious we are moving into some tough economic times. The buying power of our dollars is slipping and inflationary trends are fast outpacing earnings. View full article »

“Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me. Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.”
Psalm 35:1,2

In July of 1776 the second Continental Congress culminated its work in Philadelphia by drafting the document we now know as the Declaration of Independence.
In that fine document the framers commended themselves to the “protection of Divine Providence” as well as submitted their reasons for separation to “the opinions of mankind” in order that all might see the justness of their cause. View full article »

Eve Was Her Name

Her nameWomen

“Then the Lord God said: “it is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.”…And the rib which the Lord God took from the man He made into a woman and brought her to the man.
Then the man said: “this at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man” (Genesis 2:18, 22-23)
“The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.” (Genesis 3:20)

God named Adam- Adam named Eve, but first he had named her Woman. Although her first name, woman, became a title to describe her gender; her second name stayed on as her personal name- we don’t call every woman who becomes a mother an Eve.
Eve means something like “life-giver” in Hebrew.

It is interesting to note that Adam gives her this name at the time when both Adam and Eve have just been cursed and God has pronounced a sentence of death over their heads. However, at the same time, God promised a Seed- a Messiah who would come and crush the head of the Serpent and in being bruised Himself bring life to Adam’s race.
This of course was fulfilled in and through our Savior Jesus Christ.

This linking of the two names: woman and Eve is probably what Paul was referencing in I Timothy 2:15 when he says of women “Yet she will be saved through childbearing- if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”
Obviously Scripture is not here teaching that it is by being mothers that women are saved eternally.
He is probably saying in different way what He also said in Galatians 4:4 “At just the right time, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.”

Women being mothers is a central purpose for which God made women. Of course it is true that not all women will marry and have children.
It is also true that not all married women will have children. God is the ultimate giver of life. Nevertheless, it is in fulfilling this God given purpose that most women will find their greatest ministry and purpose in life.

Don’t let the culture set the agenda of your life. God put a yearning in your heart to mother- do it with all your heart and soul as unto the Lord. We need you.
Because of grace,
Tim

Help in our Weakness

God at workWeakness

“The Spirit Himself helps us in our weakness…”
Romans 8:26a
Reading Martin Lloyd Jones’ book on the Person and work of the Holy Spirit, I came across a gem.
Jones was talking about how the early church was characterized by the dynamic working of the Holy Spirit. As he developed this theme he reminded us that that is exactly why early church life was so messy. View full article »
