National Judgment?

As I was paging through the Jackson Hole Daily the other day, a headline caught my attention: UN chief: Natural Disasters have quadrupled since ’70. I had to do a double take and then read the article. In the article Secretary Anonio Guterres asserted that since 1970 natural disasters around the world have quadrupled in number and severity and that since 1995 the United States of America has borne the brunt of them. Whether hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes the devastation of property and loss of life has soared. The mess in Houston and the upcoming devastation in Florida, as well as the recent massive earthquake off the coast of Mexico all seem to testify to the same thing.

Why is this happening? Of course the UN secretary asserted that it is because of global climate change. As part of his speech he implored President Trump to reconsider pulling out of the Paris climate agreement. In order to save the world we’d better clean up our ways and stop burning fossil fuels!

Actually the truth is far more unnerving. In the Scripture, God testifies that not only does He use natural disasters as a wake-up call to nations to “turn from their wicked ways”, but an increase in the severity of natural disasters is one of the “signs” of the “Day of the Lord.” Would it not be more rational to attribute these disasters to the stirring of the wrath of God against the wicked perversions of our day and the flaunting of human pride against His revealed will? This is not Mother earth reeling from man’s environmental transgressions- This is Almighty God asserting His Sovereign control. Whether this is “The Day of the Lord” prophesied in Scripture as the Day of His return- or whether this is a time of Judgment for our national transgressions, we cannot say with certainty- but in either case, it behooves us to walk humbly with our God.

Because of Grace,
Tim
