Overcoming evil with good

Romans 12:21 instructs followers of Christ to not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
We are not to repay evil with evil but to show acts of kindness to our enemy if we find him in need and even bless those who would persecute us.

Does this command relinquish us of our duty to the helpless and innocent around us?
In order to overcome evil with good, are we to idly stand by offering refreshments to the perpetrators of evil upon children and our families being careful not to offend or be perceived as “politically” motivated or minded?

God forbid such a miscarriage of what He calls justice.
Jesus reserved his harshest words for the pharisaical lot who tithed mint and dill and cumin, but had neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness.

In this “love” equation let us not forget the defenseless, God loves them too.
