The Myth of Settled Science
Recently President Obama spoke at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy commencement. In his speech he made the following remarks: ‘I’m here today to say that climate change constitutes a serious threat to global security, an immediate risk to our national security. And, make no mistake; it will impact how our military defends our country.”
The ‘science’ of climate change has given rise to multitudes of claims and counter claims as to the future of life on planet earth. Although there remains significant doubt as to the causes of climate change among multitudes of scientific authorities, nevertheless governmental agencies have increasingly been pounding the pulpit with the announcement that climate change is not only real- it is man made, and furthermore, the only way to save life as we know it on planet earth is to make draconian cuts in carbon emissions.
Now not to disappoint you, today’s sermon is not about climate change. However, what we will be wrestling with is the subject of Science- or ‘knowledge’. The word science comes from a Latin term which simply means ‘to know’. So what we will wrestle with today from the Word of God are questions like: How can we be sure of anything? What are the limits of Science? Why do Scientists so often claim to be an authority on a subject only to change their minds later and give a completely new answer. I hope our study proves to be enlightening.
